Violin Teacher Deirdre Ward
Having performed and recorded worldwide with top international musicians, Deirdre now teaches violin at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester. Violinists and violists of all ages, from beginner to advanced, also come to her home in Morecambe, Lancashire for private music lessons and coaching sessions.
Deirdre loves helping her students gain a greater sense of achievement and enjoyment from their violin playing. She first started teaching in her teens and the continual development in her teaching style over the years has often had as much to do with what she learns from her students as her own extensive training! She also draws on over 20 years experience of Alexander Technique lessons with John Woodward in Lancaster, integrating this unique awareness into her own violin teaching.
Professional Training & Performing Career
Deirdre is fortunate to have been taught by the very best violin teachers right from the start. A Lancashire County Music Award first enabled her to travel from Morecambe to Manchester for lessons. Later she commuted from the North West to Harlow in Essex for lessons with Howard Davis, 1st violin in the Alberni String Quartet. After just 5 years of private violin lessons she was awarded a scholarship on both violin & viola to the Royal Academy of Music in London to study with Australian teacher, Carmel Kaine. During her four years at the Academy Deirdre won various prizes for solo and string quartet playing. A further four years of post-graduate violin study followed in the USA with world-renowned violinist Sergiu Luca at Rice University, Houston, Texas.
Working as Sergiu Luca's teaching assistant at Rice, Deirdre combined freelance work with the Houston Symphony, Grand Opera and Ballet Orchestras before moving to California to join the San Diego Symphony Orchestra as 1st violin.
In 1991 she was appointed Professor of Violin at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. She returned to the USA each year as guest artist on violin and viola at the Cascade Head Chamber Music Festival in Oregon and with 'Context' and the 'Da Camera Society' in Houston.
Back in Europe her performing activities included many foreign tours and recordings with Sir John Elliot Gardner's world-famous English Baroque Soloists and Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique.
On her return to the UK, Deirdre was invited to join the string departments of both Chetham's School of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music Juniors in Manchester where she taught for 20 years. Her busy freelance career continued with many different ensembles and orchestras such as the Royal Northern Sinfonia, Hallé, Manchester Camerata and Northern Chamber Orchestra. Deirdre was also 1st violin of the Ensemble Trémoine and The Quartet for the King of Prussia.
These days she combines her violin teaching commitments with a different kind of instruction. Having qualified as an RYA Instructor and Yachtmaster Offshore she also teaches yacht sailing on Morecambe Bay at Bay Sea School, the company she formed with her partner John Parlane several years ago.
